📖 How to manage your portfolios
🎯 1. Create your first portfolio
Press + Add portfolio and fill in the key fields:
- Name and market — a label of your choice (e.g. "Pension Fund") and the reference exchange (e.g. London Stock Exchange), used to evaluate trading hours and prices
- Portfolio purpose — a short, optional free-text note (e.g. "Fund for my daughter's wedding") describing the portfolio's intent. It's shown as a summary in the card and provided to AI Observations as context to sharpen the analysis
- Real or realistic portfolio — real if you log the transactions you actually make with your broker; realistic if you want to simulate with historical dates and prices how a strategy would have performed, with no linked broker account
- Portfolio Profile — Objective (Capital protection, Capital growth, Income, Drawdown), Risk tolerance and Time horizon: this is the baseline used by Portfolio Observations to describe whether the configuration is consistent with what you've stated
- Regular contributions, Income/Withdrawal, Rebalancing, Costs & Tax — optional sections of the form: set frequencies, thresholds and costs here if you want the system to track them automatically. They stay visible as a summary in the "Portfolio characteristics" block
📝 2. Log your transactions
Once the portfolio is created, use + Add transaction to build its history. Individual: Buy/Sell on positions (they determine the average cost price), Deposit/Withdrawal of cash, Capital (+) vs Income (−) — a key distinction: Capital invested in the metrics only includes net contributions, not withdrawn income. Rebalancing — Buy and Sell transactions generated to bring the portfolio back to target when an instrument moves outside the min/max thresholds.
Recurring: if you've set up Regular Contributions or Income/Withdrawal, you can enter them in bulk by specifying only the start and end dates, instead of adding each transaction by hand. The same applies to Rebalancing: specify a date range and check frequency, and the system generates in bulk the transactions needed to realign all instruments to target.
You can edit or delete any transaction at any time: the portfolio recalculates everything automatically.
📈 3. Track performance over time
Open a portfolio's card to track it over time: Live prices — the main KPIs update automatically with market prices whenever you open the card. Composition and allocation — the pie chart and instruments table show how much each position weighs relative to target, with the rebalancing status. History Charts — Portfolio Value, Drawdown and Position Performance (with transactions flagged on the chart). Forecast — projects your real portfolio 1-10 years into the future with a 3-scenario Monte Carlo model, based on the last 10 years of historical data and automatically updated with the same parameters set in the portfolio.
🧭 4. Interpret the results and suggested actions
Two tools help you understand whether you're on track: Portfolio Observations — historical KPIs and Profile Match, with the Observations (deterministic text) or, if generated, AI Observations describing the data in an educational way, without suggesting specific actions; and the Next 90 Days — if you've set up rebalancing, it shows the next review date and, if necessary, which instrument to sell or buy to bring the portfolio back in line with target.
📖 How to read the portfolio data
📊 The main metrics
The bar at the top shows the core KPIs for your real portfolio: Value (current market value with live prices), Growth (£) (gain/loss relative to capital invested, with percentage), Annual Growth (CAGR) (average annual compound return since the portfolio was created), Income (total income withdrawals, if any), Volatility (annualised monthly standard deviation — below 10% is contained, above 20% is high) and Max Drawdown (the maximum percentage loss from the highest peak: below -5% is negligible, beyond -20% takes nerves of steel).
🥧 Composition and allocation
The pie chart and instruments table show the current composition in real time. The % Target (min · target · max) are the rebalancing thresholds you've set: the bold central value is your target, min and max the tolerance range. The status ✅ Balanced means every instrument is within its thresholds; ⚠️ Out of band means at least one instrument has moved outside its range. Small deviations from target are normal: rebalancing too often generates costs and tax that erode returns over time.
📋 Transactions
The Transactions section records the portfolio's entire history: Buy/Sell on positions (they determine the average cost price), cash Deposit/Withdrawal, and the key distinction between Capital (+) and Income (−) — only net capital contributions count toward the growth metrics, not withdrawn income. Every transaction can be edited or deleted at any time; the portfolio recalculates everything automatically.
⚖️ Rebalancing
SimpleInvest uses asymmetric absolute thresholds: you can set different min and max values relative to target (e.g. target 80%, min 75%, max 90% — you tolerate up to 10 points overweight but no more than 5 points below). The "Next 90 Days" card shows the next review date and the suggested action, including the counterparty instrument (e.g. sell Cash to buy SWDA). Wider thresholds mean fewer transactions, lower costs and better tax efficiency; narrower thresholds keep the allocation more precise but increase frequency.
📈 The charts
The History section shows three types of charts: Portfolio Value (total value month by month vs progressive capital invested), Drawdown (percentage fall from the historical high) and Position Performance (a Value/Allocation chart and a Drawdown chart for each position, with coloured diamonds flagging purchases, sales, income withdrawals and rebalances).
🔮 The Forecast
The Forecast button projects your real portfolio into the future with a 1-to-10-year slider. A Monte Carlo engine simulates 1,000 possible paths using the last 10 years of real monthly returns for each instrument (bootstrap, not a theoretical distribution), preserving the real historical correlations between instruments. The 3 scenarios (P15 cautious, P50 median, P85 favourable) show a band of uncertainty, not a margin of error. The "includes..." notes indicate which portfolio parameters were applied to the simulation: regular contributions, income/withdrawals, rebalances and costs & tax. If the portfolio is 100% Savings Account, the forecast is a single deterministic line, with no uncertainty.
🎯 The Portfolio Profile
Defines the stated objectives for this portfolio — Objective (Capital protection, Capital growth, Income or Drawdown), Risk tolerance and Time horizon — used as a reference for Portfolio Observations. It's edited from the portfolio edit form and is always visible, read-only, in the card.
📝 Portfolio Observations
These describe how consistent the real portfolio is with the stated profile, based on actual historical data — no aggregate score: this is a real portfolio, not a simulation. They include historical KPIs, Profile Match (Objective/Risk/Horizon) and a summary narrative. AI Observations generate a personalised commentary via artificial intelligence with the same descriptive approach, on request via the "Generate AI observations" button — the result stays saved until the next manual refresh. With only a few months of history, the data isn't yet statistically meaningful: interpret it with caution until you have at least 1-2 years of history.
💡 What to watch out for
Live prices update automatically when you open the card; outside market hours they reflect the last close. The average cost price is the weighted average cost per unit across all buy transactions. Recorded operating costs reduce net return even though they don't appear in the portfolio's value — over long horizons even small fees have a significant impact. With only a few months of history, the CAGR can look very high or very low: it only makes sense to interpret it over at least 12-24 months of data.
